University lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations are combining forces to raise awareness.
Gays, Lesbians, and Everyone Else [GLEE] and Homage aren’t competing for members, Homage co-chair Deanne Hodge said. In fact, she said they are working together to support the community.
To strengthen the bonds between the groups and the community, both GLEE and Homage are co-hosting events including a Halloween dance and organizing a trip to Gay Day at Six Flags Over Texas and the Alan Ross Freedom Parade in Dallas.
“[The organizations] are not as competitive against each other for membership as some might think. Rather, we tend to share members, since each group has a different fundamental goal and purpose,” Hodge said in an e-mail.
Each club focuses on a different aspect of the community. Homage wants to shed light on issues that impact the LGBT community by inviting guests to speak on subjects ranging from politics to sexually transmitted diseases. Homage will have a speaker from the LGBT resource center in Dallas. Members are also planning a visit from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, a group oriented to educate the community, especially in schools.
